Skin Ego is an ongoing body of work melding moving image and sculptural objects into narrative-based installation. Centered on a photograph of a real-life whale dissection Skin Ego utilizes the viscerally poignant moment of a whale’s necropsy to create ritualized encounters, exploring the relationship between the human and non-human. Through latex sculptural skins that house video and sound, Skin Ego picks up the concept of projection, both materially and psychically, probing the holes and tears in the concept of self, the inherent messiness of the body, and the sacredness of interiorities. Through repetition, reenactment, and reiteration, artifacts from the whale’s unknowable world are symbolically amplified. Viewers are invited into an intimate and tender connection with a large than life being asking us to reflect on our own bodies and our relationship to the ultimately mysterious environment around us.
